NFC Forum's annual competition promotes the development and deployment of innovative and exemplary NFC services. Entries were judged on their innovation, commercial potential, and usability, as well as quality of design and implementation.
In the competition, developers in a Commercial Track vied for the honor of having their solutions named “The Best NFC Service of the Year 2009,” while the Research Track recognized “The Most Innovative NFC Research Project of the Year 2009.” Learn more about the winnners and finalists:

The Commercial Track
First Place Winner: Interactive Research & Development of Pakistan, for Interactive Alerts for Childhood Pneumonia

The first-place winner in the Commercial Track is Interactive Research & Development of Pakistan for "Interactive Alerts for Childhood Pneumonia," a real-time patient tracking and referral system for use in low-resource settings. The system is currently being used for a pneumonia surveillance study in young children in Karachi, Pakistan.
The Interactive Alerts system has been developed for surveillance in low-resource settings. Children are given a radio frequency ID (RFID) tag in bracelet form. The tag is scanned every time the child visits a participating general practitioner clinic or hospital in the program. Clinical and laboratory data is collected and posted to a secure server in real time.

Second Place Winner: Servtag GmbH of Germany, for friendticker.com
The second-place winner in the Commercial Track is Servtag of Germany, for "friendticker.com," an NFC-based mobile social platform that allows users to share their actual locations with friends by touching Friendticker NFC stickers in restaurants and bars.
More than 250 NFC stickers have been applied to locations in Berlin, letting users take advantage of the first NFC-based social network running in Germany.

Third Place Winner: Nordea of Finland,for online banking authenticated solution The third-place winner in the Commercial Track is Nordea of Finland, for its NFC-based strong end-user authentication solution for online banking, which enables secure access to an online banking site via an NFC-enabled handset and a dual-interface bank card.
All customer processes use NFC: downloading the application, launching the application, and authenticating the event. With over 1 billion strong-authentication banking events in just the Nordic region, this solution provides both savings and convenience to customers.

First Place Winner: VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, for Hot in the City

The first-place winner in the Research Track is VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, for "Hot in the City," a mobile social media service that uses NFC-enabled mobile phones as a friend connection platform. View the presentation.
University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), Faculty of Electrical Engineering: Touch to Communicate
In the Research Track, the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), Faculty of Electrical Engineering was awarded second place for "Touch to Communicate," which allows a consumer who has difficulty communicating to manage phone calls with a simple touch between a mobile device and passive electronic tags.

ETH Zurich (Switzerland) for APriori
The third-place prize goes to ETH Zurich of Switzerland for the "APriori" NFC-based mobile application, which supports consumer purchasing decisions by interacting with tagged products to deliver point-of-sale product ratings.
